Slept

“There's a dissolve which fades from a wide shot of the, you know,
final black-and-white photo to a close-up of Jack's face.
And just for a second there, his hairline fades in
to form a Hitler moustache.

"I Think a lot of things Happened right here
in this particular hotel over the years
and not all of 'em was Good."

He once said, "How do you get all of that"...
meaning The Holocaust... "into a two-hour movie?
I think he found the Holocaust of such evil magnitude
that he just couldn't bring himself to treat it directly,
which is why he used the form of a horror film
to treat it indirectly

I Believe Kubrick, possibly consciously
has solved a kind of problem that History has
which is that it's very hard for many people
to connect emotionally to
a gigantic big killing we
hear about in The Past.

People who don't have direct family experience
of it themselves may hear the statistic.
You know, Hitler, among other things,
killed 6,000,000 Jews in his Holocaust.
6,000,000 is a number Too Big
I mean Stalin is reputed to have said, you know,
"You kill one person, it's a Murder and a Tragedy.
You kill 1,000,000 people, it's a statistic."
He was Talking about a Psychological Fact.
And, you know, Stalin himself was... what is it...
starved about 3,000,000 people
in The Western Ukraine in the '30s on purpose

My Point is it may be that Kubrick was conscious
of having offered a kind of way to bridge
that inability to feel for those gigantic statistics
in that, if you go and see The Shining innocent the first time
and are terrified... you're just terrified
and you'll always remember being terrified...
and then go back aware of what The Symbolism and
the general larger pattern meanings of The Movie are,
then you can begin to make something
of a connection, saying, "Oh, my God.
I remember being terrified for
The Individual little Danny and Wendy here.

And that feeling is actually being...
is for people who are symbols of victims
of all kinds of horrendous genocides

And of course, His Wife has subsequently talked about,
you know, how close he came to making His Holocaust movie
The Aryan Papers, but that he got more and more
and more depressed and was relieved
when he had an excuse not to do it.
He used Schindler's List as [an excuse], saying,
"Ah, it's already been done."

I mean, that struck a bell with me.
And I've done a lot of stories as a journalist about people who study...
either talked to people who are victims of horrors or study it
And there's... Freud talked about it as The Contagion.
The depression seeps into you. It's... you know what...

Kubrick had a wonderful comment about this
when somebody asked him,
"Isn't it True that Your Movies are showing us,
just the horrendous side of Humanity --
You know, that's awful bleak."

And Kubrick said,
"Ah, but there's something very positive about it as well.
And that is, it shows at the very least
that We can get our minds around what that horror is.

And Danny, from The Beginning,
has His Mind all over The Problem.
He's looking at it. In a way, Danny's big-wheeling back and forth,
up and down the hallways... Danny is learning that Hotel....

He's learning all The Horrors. He's Seeing them.
But they're just in The Past, and
Hallorann gave him The Secret.

He said, "Remember, Danny."
Remember what Tony tells him.
Remember what Mr. Hallorann said:
"They're just like Pictures in A Book,
they're not real."

Now, that's a really important lesson :
People Who Shine, who see through History,
understand that The Past
simply does not exist
except in one place --

And that's The Present Tense instant
of The Mind, remembering.

That is, exactly... that is a place you can go to somehow
and yet it doesn't exist. And so Hallorann tells Danny,
"You're gonna see some horrible things."

Apparently, he told him.
"You're gonna see some horrible things,
but remember, they're not real.
They're like pictures in a book --
They no longer exist.

That's a key to not getting
depressed about it.

And that's... You see, This is a Movie about what The Past...
How The Past impinges, any past,
and about How to Get Over That and
How Not to Be a Victim of History.

You know, if you doubt
what I've written about it,
just go see The Movie.
I've figured all this out from
just seeing The Movie. It's there

It's obvious, and most people
who went and saw the movie said,
"Oh, my goodness. It is there."

String Theory

“So I began to think more
and more about The Individual
and I looked into
what that actually meant
And what it was,
was a structure that was
pretty much created…

The Ego-Structure was created
out of what Julian Jaynes calls
the “bicameral mind”
becoming ONE mind.
And apparently – according to him –
he says that back in the old days
of the Greeks,
and the earliest writing of the world,
people didn’t have self-consciousness
in the way that we have.

They didn’t have egos.

They didn’t understand themselves
as “I” in the same way that we do.

Because the corpus callosum –
that connects the two hemispheres
of the brain
– WASN’T CONNECTED.

So if you heard A Voice,
that voice was God.
And Homer, and all those guys,
you’ve got plenty of examples
of people hearing
the voice of God,
and acting on that.

Alexander constantly acted
on the voice of God.

Julian Jaynes suggests that
it wasn’t the voice of God –
it was the voice of the left hemisphere of the brain communicating with the right hemisphere of the brain,
interpreted AS a god.

So okay: now we’ve got the two things joined together.

We’ve got this beautiful bridge in the middle that links the two.
But we have the ego structure – which was created when those things linked.”

The Observer :
Bad enough I have to give Dick-and-Jane explanations to The President.
I've gotta give you one too. All right.

One end of this string represents Your Birth.
The other end, Your Death.

You tie the ends together,
and your life is a loop.

Ball The Loop...
and the days of your life
touch each other
out of sequence.

Therefore, leaping from one point
of the string to another...
Would move you backward or forward
within your own lifetime.

Which is Our Project :
Quantum Leap!

Future Boy :
Moe?
Sorry. I... I... I knocked.
I guess you didn't hear me.

Captain Galaxy :
I was in The Basement.
It's underneath The House.

Future Boy :
....Yeah.

Captain Galaxy :
Did Irene send you,
or is she lurking somewhere outside?

Future Boy :
No, no, no, I came alone.
She's worried about you, though.
She told me about the hearing tomorrow.
I guess this is the summons.

Captain Galaxy :
You know, a lot of people thought
Einstein was crazy,
but they didn't try to lock him up.

Future Boy :
Listen, Moe, I KNOW You're Not Crazy,
but why don't you just meet with this Dr. Sandler guy so he knows it, too?

Captain Galaxy :
I don't need to meet a Doctor.
All I need is another 24 hours.

Future Boy :
Why do you keep saying that?
Don't you understand
I'm here to help you?

Sooner or later you're gonna
have to face this thing.
Time is NOT going to stand still.

Captain Galaxy :
I want to show you something.

When I was young, my, uh,
passion was trains.
I couldn't get enough of them.
I even memorized their timetables.

Future Boy :
I did the same thing.

Captain Galaxy :
And whenever anything would go bad,
I would just imagine that
I could just jump on A Train
and go anywhere I wanted to,
to any time I wanted to.

But now I've got something
better than A Train.
I've got a Time-o-nometer.

Future Boy :
What is it?

Captain Galaxy :
It's A Time Machine.

The Observer :
You sure it doesn't make cappuccino?

Captain Galaxy :
When I first started
playing Captain Galaxy,
I became fascinated with
the thought of actually
being able to travel in time,
and I began to read
everything I could about it.

Heisenberg's Theory of Indeterminacy,
Planck's Hypothesis of Discreet Units,
Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

Future Boy :
Yeah, but when you say "Time Machine",
you mean a time machine like,
like on Your Show, right?

Captain Galaxy :
The Show? The Show?
No, no, no.

That's Fantasy. This is REAL.
Look -- Time is like A Piece of String.
One End of The String is Birth,
The Other is Death.

You put them together,
and Your LIFE, is A LOOP.

The Observer :
Sam, that's YOUR Theory (!!!!)

Captain Galaxy :
If I can travel fast enough
ALONG The Loop,
I will eventually end up back
at The Beginning of MY Life.

The Observer :
He's ALMOST got it..!!

Future Boy :
Uh, well, let me ask you,
What Would Happen
if, uh, you would
BALL The String,
right, and then
Each Day of Your Life
would touch
ANOTHER Day.

And then you could travel
from one place on The String
to another, thus enabling
you to move back and forth
within Your Own Lifetime, maybe.

Captain Galaxy :
That's it. That's it.
Then I could actually...

Future Boy :
Quantum Leap?

Captain Galaxy :
Quantum Leap.

I Like that.
I Like that a lot.

Captain Galaxy :
Well, I see that we're
just about out of time.

But before we sign off today,
I'd like to make an announcement.

Captain Galaxy
is going away
for a while.

He's going back to see
if he can find something
he lost a long time ago.

But before we sign off,
we have time for one last letter.

The Observer :
How come you're not out there?

Future Boy :
Oh, I figured that he deserved
to answer the last letter by himself.
I guess I was here to
get them together, huh?

The Observer :
Yeah, well, Ziggy had
a sloppy floppy on this one.
But it all worked out, right, didn't it?

Future Boy :
What Happens to him?

The Observer :
Well, he goes to live with Irene
and spends the rest of his life
entertaining the kids in the neighborhood
with Tales of The Future.

Captain Galaxy :
Today's letter is from
little Sam Beckett
in Elk Ridge, Indiana.

Sam writes:

"Dear Captain Galaxy,

Could you please explain Your Theory of Time Travel to Us?"

Well, Sam, our lifetimes
are like A Piece of String.

But if you roll the string up into A Ball,
ALL The Days of Your Life...

The Two Hannibals

It's The Other One.

33     EXT.     STREET IN LOS ANGELES
A young woman's running away from two vampires who are chasing her.

Angelus steps up to her and puts his arm around her.

YOUNG WOMAN
Help Me.

ANGELUS
It's all right, doll.
I've got you. Shh.

YOUNG WOMAN
I don't know how to Thank You.

ANGELUS
(in vamp face, turns to the woman
I do. Scream for me.

YOUNG WOMAN
(screaming)
Aah!

Angelus goes to bite the woman, but is interrupted when he overhears three other vampires talking in the street.

VAMPIRE 3
The Slayer?
You Sure?

VAMPIRE 4
I just got word.
She's in Town.

Angelus smiles and lets the woman go.

He goes to a phone booth, dials.

ANGELUS
(to phone
Hi, Dawn. Yeah, it's me
Is Your Sister Home? She is....?
(hangs up)

It's The Other One.

“ I regard the two major male archetypes in 20th Century literature as Leopold Bloom and Hannibal Lecter. M.D. Bloom, the perpetual victim, the kind and gentle fellow who finishes last, represented an astonishing breakthrough to new levels of realism in the novel, and also symbolized the view of humanity that hardly anybody could deny c. 1900-1950. History, sociology, economics, psychology et al. confirmed Joyce’s view of Everyman as victim

Bloom, exploited and downtrodden by the Brits for being Irish and rejected by many of the Irish for being Jewish, does indeed epiphanize humanity in the first half of the 20th Century. And he remains a nice guy despite everything that happens...

Dr Lecter, my candidate for the male archetype of 1951-2000, will never win any Nice Guy awards, I fear, but he symbolizes our age as totally as Bloom symbolized his.

Hannibal's wit, erudition, insight into others, artistic sensitivity, scientific knowledge etc. make him almost a walking one man encyclopedia of Western Civilization.

As for his "hobbies" as he calls them — well, according to the World Game Institute, since the end of World War II, in which 60,000,000 human beings were murdered by other human beings, 193, 000,000 more humans have been murdered by other humans in brush wars, revolutions, insurrections etc.

What better symbol of our age than a serial killer?

Hell, can you think of any recent U.S. President who doesn't belong in the Serial Killer Hall of Fame?

And their motives make no more sense, and no less sense, than Dr Lecter's Darwinian one-man effort to rid the planet of those he finds outstandingly loutish and uncouth. ”

Infinite Improbability : The Quantum Heresy

Milkman
Now Then, Madam -
I'm going to show you three numbers,
and I want you to tell me if you see any similarity between them.

(holds up a card saying '3' three times)

Lady

They're all number three.

Milkman

No. Try again.

Lady

They're all number three?

Milkman

No, They're all number three.

(he ticks his board again)

...number NIINE, number NINE, number NINE ...

RIMMER
Holly, what's going on?

HOLLY
What?

RIMMER:

What's happening?

HOLLY
Um, Hercule Poirot's just stepped off the steaming train.
And if you want my opinion, I think they all did it.

RIMMER
Why did we have to have you as the ship's computer?
We'd be better off with a bucket of sheep's slop running things.

HOLLY
If you've got a complaint, just come straight out with it.
Don't hide behind innuendo and hyperbole.

RIMMER
Why is it raining fish in our sleeping quarters?!

HOLLY
I'd be lying if I said I knew.
The only comparable incident on record
is in 12th century Burgandy
when it rained herring.

Here is Wisdom

"Today, a young man on acid realised that :

  • All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration.

  • That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively.

  • There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream and we're the imagination of ourselves."

"Here's Tom with the weather."

"Wow! Did you see the fuckin news!" By the way that thing I just did about matter is energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one conssciousness experiencing itself subjectively, and dadada, that thing I just did?

Einstein proved that...!
[Cosmic Manic Joker Laugh]

Not Complete, Even Though Correct.

 It's called Quantum Physics.

Anyway I was tripping one day with Al, which was really weird, cos he's dead.

And I said 'Al do you notice the walls are fuckin breathing right now?'

"Bill I noticed the same thing, I've got to jot some numbers down real quick, I just had a fuckin idea"

"I saw your head light up like a fuckin bulb Al, this is unbelievable.

Its called Quantum Physics
its called The 20th Century...
We'll get there one day. "

You've been fantastic and I hope you enjoyed it.

There is a point - is there a point to all of this...?

Let's find a point.

Is there a point to my act?

I would say there is. I have to.

The world is like a Ride at an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think that it's Real because that's how powerful our minds are.

[Audience member shouts 'bollocks'

There is a lot denial in this ride, the ride, in fact, is made up of denial "All things work in Goatboys favour".

The world is like a ride at an amusement park. It goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while

Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, "Is this Real, or is this Just a Ride?

And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say,

"Hey - don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride..."

And we...
Kill those people.

Ha ha !!

"Shut him up!"

"We have a lot invested in this ride!
Shut him up!

Look at my furrows of worry.

Look at my big bank account and my family.

This just has to be real."

Just a ride.

But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok?

Jesus :
Murdered

Martin Luther King :
Murdered

Malcolm X :
Murdered

Gandhi :
Murdered

John Lennon :
Murdered

Reagan :
Wounded.

But it doesn't matter because:

It's Just a Ride.
And we can change it anytime we want.

It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money.

A choice, right now, between fear and love.

The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off.

The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one

Here's what we can do to change The World, right now, to a better ride :

Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defences each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, Forever, in Peace.

Thank you very much, you've been great.
[Applause]

I hope you enjoyed it.

London, you were fantastic, thank you, thank you very much.

[bow] [bow]

[three shots ring out - Bill crumples to the ground]
